<div itemprop="description"> <p> <b> van der Rijt, Cornelis (Corny) &ndash; 85, 14 Smith Ave., Dartmouth. It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, who passed away Sunday, December 30, 2012, at home. Born in Uden, Noord Brabant, Netherlands, Cornelis was the son of the late Arnoldus and Wilhelmina (van den Elzen) van der Rijt. Corny was a 4th Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus, and a lifelong member of Blessed Pope John XXIII Parish, and he was a volunteer fireman at the Cole Harbour Fire Station. Corny worked for many years in the farming industry, he also worked as a carpenter and finally in Operations at Cole Harbour Place before retiring. He had a great passion for gardening and took pride in sharing his harvest with family and friends. He enjoyed many social events, such as playing cards and pool, bingo, dancing and was an avid swimmer at Cole Harbour Place and spent many hours fishing and hunting with his sons. Cornelis was predeceased by his loving wife of 57 years, Anna Maria (van der Zanden). Survived by his daughter, Darlene (Francois); sons, Arie (Deborah), Gerry (Teana), Henry (Debbie), John, Terry (Katherine) and Chris; grandchildren, Jennifer (Martin), Lyndsey (Ryan), Tyler and Kelsey; great-grandchildren, Alexandre, Xavier and Oliver; sisters, Miet, Jo and Riek (Arie); brother Harrie; and several nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Cole Harbour Funeral Home, 1234 Cole Harbour Road, Cole Harbour; visitation is Friday, January 4, 2013 from 7-9 p.m. With funeral mass to be held Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 9 a.m. at Blessed Pope John XXIII Parish, 35 Colby Drive, Colby Village with Father Irek Bem </b> <b> officiating </b> <b> . Reception to follow in the church hall and burial in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, </b> <b> 33 Old Sackville Rd </b> <b> , Lower Sackville </b> <b> . While flowers are appreciated, in lieu donations can be made to a charity of your choice. </b> </p> </div>
