<div itemprop="description">KIRBY, Douglas Hills, PEng, of Halifax passed away peacefully Friday afternoon, December 12, 2014. Born in Halifax on September 23, 1935, he was the son of the late E. Cyril and Myrtle (Hills) Kirby. Doug received his Degree in Civil Engineering from the Nova Scotia Technical College in 1958 after being awarded the Foundation Companies Canada Scholarship and began his working career with Robb Engineering in Amherst. Several career moves took him and his family to Lunenburg, Dartmouth, Bridgewater, Oxford and finally Truro. Upon moving to Oxford, he purchased the former Oxford Foundry and re-established the company as Oxford Foundry &amp; Machine Company Ltd, expanding into machinery manufacture, then expanding the business to Truro. Doug's working career included GM of Acadia Gas Engines Ltd, Regional VP of Wajax Industries, Industrial Commissioner Truro/Debert, and Kirmac Maple Products in Earltown. Doug was an active member of several service clubs including the Kiwanis Club for which he achieved the Golden K. He served on many committees, boards, clubs (includes curling), and was a long standing member of First United Church in Truro. He enjoyed a good game of bridge, golf and singing. In his younger years he was an accomplished bagpiper and played many other instruments. Doug is survived by wife, Pearl (Pattison), Halifax; children Paula (Tom) Henley, Berwick; Stephen Kirby, Shortts Lake; Janet (Russell) MacKinlay, Upper LaHave; Pamela (Paul) Quinn, Cole Harbour; stepchildren Janet (Pete) Egli, Timberlea; Rev. Paul (Vennessa) Pattison, Moncton; Robert (Sandra) Pattison, Tantallon; grandchildren Sarah, Hillary, Emma, Nick and Joel; stepgrandchildren Ben (Amy), Alex, Daniel and Emily; and several other nieces and nephews. Doug was predeceased by his first wife Elizabeth (Caldwell), his brother Robert (Barb) Kirby and sister Lorraine (Peter) Green. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Full Gospel Church, 806 Kearney Lake Road, Bedford, on December 17, 2014, at 2:00 pm with Reverend Gary Barrett officiating. A reception will immediately follow the service for family and friends. Interment will be held in Truro at a later time. Family flowers only; memorial donations may be made to charity of choice.
