Coleman, Edith Theresa Age 89, of Halifax/Sydney, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on September 29 at Parkstone Nursing Home, Halifax, N.S. Edith (Edee) was born in Sydney to Duncan and Loretta Gillis, met her husband Charlie at a church dance and married him 66 years ago. Charlie and Edee lived in Sydney until 2010 when they moved to Halifax. She will be greatly missed by her loving and devoted husband Charlie and her children: Charlie (Kathy) Coleman; Fran (Lloyd) Foster; Susan (Michael) Sampson; Kathleen Coleman, Halifax; Doug (Susan) Coleman, Whitby ON; Rick Coleman, Sydney; and daughter-in-law Janet Campbell, Waverley. She is survived by her seventeen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers Francis, Hugh and Wilfred and her son, Paul. Edee graduated from Mount St. Bernard with her diploma in Secretarial Arts and then worked at Eastern Light and Power. After raising seven children, she returned to the workforce as office manager at the VON in Sydney. Mom had a keen mind and was a lifelong learner, continuing her education and proudly receiving her Bachelor of Arts from UCCB at the age of 60. Mom was a talented artist and craftswoman. She was a long-time member of the Cape Breton Artists Association and a founding member of The 9 of Arts, an amateur artist group of nine Cape Breton artists. Many of Edee’s paintings grace the walls of her families’ homes and her stained glass lamps are considered prized possessions. Ingonish was a special place for Edee and we are left with wonderful memories of our times there, especially at the bungalow on Beach Crossing Road and the Highland Bungalows. Her apple pie and homemade bread were legendary. She was a valued member of Immaculate Heart Parish CWL, playing a leadership role in submitting resolutions to the National Convention, including a successful resolution to establish the Maple Leaf as a trademark of Canadian manufacturing. Edee was an inspiration for her family as she faced the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease. Her journey has reminded us all of the importance of family and her quiet strength and indomitable spirit were a source of inspiration for us. We are very grateful for the compassionate care she received at Bradford Hall, Parkland Estates; and in the last four years on Mount Lane, Parkstone Nursing Home, where she received exceptional and loving care. A funeral mass will be held Friday, October 7 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Benedict’s Church, 4 Radcliffe Drive, Halifax, with a reception following in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia. Online condolences may be sent by visiting www.coleharbourfuneral.com.
