A gracious, much loved lady, Evelyn (MacInnis) Churchill, 93, died peacefully at Dartmouth General Hospital, Thursday, December 11 with much of her family present. She was born in Cochrane, Ontario, November 12, 1921, second daughter of R. Roy and Olive Mitchell (Cochrane being the home of Tim Horton, their paper boy, as Evelyn sometimes revealed!)

Evelyn moved to Toronto following secretarial school graduation where she found employment. She enjoyed what the city life had to offer, especially operas which you could then attend for virtually pennies in Toronto. She met and married a Glace Bay man, which firmly established her maritime connection. She became a much loved part of a large family. They moved to Dartmouth in 1965 for business reason, eventually moving to Sydney, C.B. Following the untimely death of her husband, Harvey R. MacInnis, Evelyn and other family members eventually returned to Dartmouth. She was able to resume work with the City of Dartmouth School Admin with whom she had formerly worked where she became Secretary to the School Superintendent. She always said she became bored after about four years in a job and found employment at the former Nova Scotia Housing Commission as a contracts technician. At both organizations she made friendships which last till this day.

Evelyn grew up in a musical household which shaped her entire life. In her own words, she said: “Music has been my religion, a gift that I have truly enjoyed, a gift that has succoured me through my life”. As a girl she was active in all levels of choir in her home church, member Cape Breton Chorale, Dartmouth Choral Society, choirs of Grace United Church Dartmouth and First United Church, Musquodoboit Harbor. On returning to Dartmouth from Sydney, her dear friend Eunice Bannerman, then organist and choir director (who predeceased her by only weeks ) virtually “ordered” her to choir practice. The resulting warm, loving relationships with choir members remains.

In 1983 she married a member of the tenor section, A Winston “Dooley” Churchill. They shared a remarkable 31 years, of travel (“You’re never home!”), gardening, singing and making new friends!

Evelyn loved her family and traveled with her husband all over Canada each year visiting all of them near and far. She had a beautiful loving spirit who loved life, nature and lived each day to its fullest belonging to different community groups, walking, emailing and chatting to family each and every day. She always was there for everyone sharing her knowledge with family and friends, as well as passing down her many delicious recipes. She always made a point to attend all her children and grandchildren’s milestones and accomplishments and attend as many events as possible. She was always happy and a joy to be around.

Evelyn will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her, including her husband “Dooley”; sisters: Miriam MacKay, AB; and Janet (Gordon) Wilson, ON; sister-in-law: Bernadette Mitchell, ON; children: Robin MacInnis, NS; Donald (Janet) MacInnis, PEI; Bruce (Amita) MacInnis, NS; Ian (Lisa) MacInnis, BC; Alison (Mark) Flynn, AB; step-daughter: Jane (Thane) Watts, NB; stepson: John Churchill, SK; grand-children: Chris (Tara), Sarah (Jeff), Kate (Jamie), Leah (Justin), Dan, Neil (Haley), Ryan, Mitchell (Kasey), Jordan (Tara), Laura (David), Megan and Gillian (T J) Kaylee, Gryffin; great-grandchildren: Ayla, Nikki, Noah, Austin, Thomas, Hailey, Cullen and Dominique and great great-grandchildren: Frankie and many beloved nieces and nephews.
