With heavy hearts, we announce Roy’s passing on Friday, September 23, 2016 at Ocean View Manor in Dartmouth at age 87. Born in Botwood, Nfld., he was the son of the late Edward (Ned) and Hazel (Foote) Pond.

Roy attended Mount Allison University and the N.S. Technical College, graduating in 1954 with a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering. He began his career with Mersey Paper in Liverpool and later joined Canadian National Railways in St. John’s. In 1956 he returned to Mt. A. as an Assistant Professor on the engineering staff. Once again immersed in academics, he went on to earn his Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Alberta, specializing in high temperature thermodynamics. In 1968, Roy joined the federal Dept. of Fisheries Inspection Branch as Regional Engineer for the Maritime Region, retiring from the Public Service in 1991.

While at Mt. A., Roy was involved with the C.O.T.C. and received his commission as Lieutenant in the R.C.E.M.E. He remained active in the Militia throughout his working career and served as Major in the Halifax Service Battalion, retiring from the Reserves after 31 years of service. He was a past member of the Association of Professional Engineers (N.S.) and the Engineering Institute of Canada. Roy was an avid, meticulous gardener, a photography buff, and a passionate HO Model Railroader. Upon retirement, he and Shirley joined Grandview Golf Club and wintered in Florida at their favourite getaway in Safety Harbour.

Roy will be remembered for his unwavering love and dedication to family, kindness and compassion to anyone he encountered, and for rarely missing an opportunity to good-naturedly school those around him on any subject technical with his most endearing engineer’s aplomb. His was a life well lived.

Roy is survived by loving wife of 36 years, Shirley (Wigglesworth/Coombes) Pond; daughters Mary (Mike) Whittleton, Sackville, NB; Charlotte, Montreal; Ruth (Paul) Pond-Kirk, Amherst; stepchildren Catherine Belanger, Dartmouth; Ian (Sherry) Coombes, Edmonton; eight grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and three nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Ron.

Special thanks are extended to the staff at the Bayside Unit at Ocean View Manor for their attentive, kind care during the past few months.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service in Roy’s honour will be held at Woodlawn United Church at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 1, with a reception to follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of N.S. or a charity of your choice.
