Isabel Grace Porter
March 15, 2015
Porter, Isabel Grace (Archibald) - Age 92, Dartmouth, NS. Died 15 March 2015 with her family at her side. She was the second daughter and one of thirteen children born in Denver, Guysborough County to Fisher and Bessie (Fenton) Archibald. She told many wonderful stories about growing up in a large, loving family during the Depression. During the Second World War she worked in munitions factories in Trenton, NS and was in the Air Force Reserve. After the war, she trained as a stenographer and worked in Ottawa on Parliament Hill. When she returned to Dartmouth, she spent a number of years with the Nova Scotia Department of Health and Social Welfare, before she met a sailor, Russ Porter, who would be her husband for 61 years. Together they embarked on a life of travel with the military, and she made homes for her husband and children from Florida to Montreal, Nova Scotia to the Netherlands, Ottawa, New Brunswick and back to Dartmouth. Summers were spent by beautiful Lochaber Lake. She was a founding member of Iona Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir into her eighties. She was an avid seamstress, knitter and craftsperson, creating many beautiful and unique items which were cherished by those who received them. Survived by her husband; daughters, Karen Whitehead (Stephen), Kathy Porter-Cunningham (Gregg); son, Kevin Porter (Sharron); grandchildren, Matt Whitehead (Lisa), Tristan Whitehead (Tori), Elizabeth Whitehead, Bryan Cunningham and Ainsley Cunningham; great-grandchildren, Henry and Veronica Whitehead; sister, Ruth MacKay (Jimmie); brothers, Ray Archibald and Eldon Archibald (Olive); sisters-in-law, Muriel Archibald (Frank), Marilyn Archibald (Harold), Ethel Archibald (Bob); brother-in-law, Eldon Taylor (Murial); many nieces and nephews.
