<div itemprop="description">The family of Mrs. Matilda Pir Khan is saddened to announce her passing at the Dartmouth General Hospital after a lengthy illness. We are grateful to all her caregivers who treated her with dignity and respect in her time of greatest need. <br> <br> <br> <br>Born in Ferozepur, Punjab, India, the third child of Dora (Hari Singh) and Samuel Browne, Matilda was predeceased by sisters Margaret Chand and Muriel Deane, and brothers Michael Browne and Maurice Browne and survived by sisters Mable Khan and Regina Jones. Matilda was married to the late Yuhanna Pir Khan and is survived by her son Daniel (Madeline) and daughter Marjorie (Albert) Chand; grandchildren Anthony, Jonathan, Benjamin, Rebecca, Aaron, Jacob; great-grandchildren; Jaden and Tavin along with thirty-four nieces and nephews and beloved grand-niece Jessica. She is respected and deeply loved by numerous cousins, especially Salina (Hari Singh) Richards and many longtime friends including Mumtaz (Khan) Schumbara. <br> <br> <br> <br>Matilda immigrated to Canada in 1965 with her husband and two young children from Lahore, Pakistan seeking better opportunities for their children for a peaceful and prosperous future. <br> <br> <br> <br>A passionate teacher, she retired from the Department of Education in 1986. She taught in the communities of North Preston for 16 years at Nelson Whynder Elementary and later in Cole Harbour at Colby Village Elementary School for 5 years where she touched the lives and hearts of hundreds of students. Matilda and a number of her colleagues strongly advocated for, and achieved, greatly improved conditions in the classroom especially in North Preston, which historically had been severely underprivileged. <br> <br> <br> <br>Outside the classroom, she helped countless many offering her assistance often when they had no other place to turn. Her kindness and generosity are an inspiration and an example for all who knew her. <br> <br> <br> <br>She lived a very active and independent life, maintaining many relationships in a large and growing extended family. She was passionate about painting and members of her family and close friends proudly enjoy many of her pieces of art. <br> <br> <br> <br>She was a dedicated Christian and was a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church since arriving in Canada. She also had a longtime association with Beechwoods Presbyterian Church, Falls Creek, Pennsylvania and the late Miss Eva-Jane Smith our step-grandmother. <br> <br> <br>A Memorial Service officiated by Rev. Dr. P.A. (Sandy) McDonald will be held on Saturday January 14, 2017 at 12:00 noon at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 216 School Street, Dartmouth. A reception will follow the service. Cremation has taken place. Interment at Dartmouth Memorial Gardens beside her husband, following the funeral service. <br> <br>In lieu of flowers, if desired, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
