<div itemprop="description">Allan, Peter died peacefully on July 8, 2016 at the age of 85. He was born in Stafford, England and educated at Wolverhampton Grammar School. He served for two years in the British Navy and immigrated to Canada in 1953. Settling in Vancouver, B.C. he spent his summer’s timbre cruising on Vancouver Island which fostered a love and appreciation of nature that never left him and which financed his way through the University of British Columbia, earning him a BA and MA. In French Studies. Then at the University of Toronto awarded his a PhD. in French literature. Peter spent his working life as a Professor of French at Mount Allison University in Sackville, NB. Sabbaticals were spent with his family in France, a country he loved and felt completely at home in. The highlights of his working life were fellowships to the Comargo Foundation in Cassis, France and the University of Oxford England. It was a magical time. His retirement years in Halifax were fulfilling ones spent sailing with Judie on his boat “Candide”, volunteering for Canadian Power and Sail, the Tall Ships Festival and leading French conversation classes at Stadacona Military Base. He made many good friends during his years there. He also had a special fondness for lawn bowling with the boys at St. Mary’s Lawn Bowls Club. Both Peter and Judie delighted in their many travels in Britain, Europe, Mexico and Australia and were always alert to the next possibility. He was a quiet and unassuming man, albeit with a sharp wit. He loved good food, wine and conversation. He had a deep and enduring love of language and his writing skills either English or French were meticulous. He was writing his memoirs when he died. We won’t see his like again. Peter was predeceased by his parents and seven siblings. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Judie, son Christopher, Alberta, daughter Sarah Jane, Australia, grandson Joshua, granddaughter Saige and his sister Patricia, England. The family would like to thank Northwood Homecare, the VON and the palliative care nurses and doctors for their tender care of Peter. Cremation has taken place, no visitations at his request.
