Rilla Nancy Markie, 65

Passed away peacefully at her residence in Dartmouth on Wednesday afternoon, August 29, 2012, at home, surrounded by family and friends.

Rilla was predeceased by her parents, the late Clifford Joseph Markie and Mae Ellen (Munro) Markie and her daughter, Amy Elizabeth Pettipas.

Left to mourn are her spouse/friend Ken Roul, son Gerry Pettipas and his wife Trina Martin of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia; sister Elizabeth Gidney of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia; 2 nieces Lisa Gidney of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and Tania Gidney of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and her nephew Todd Gidney of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Also left behind was the son of Mr. Roul, Kenneth, whom she loved dearly and for whom she waited to return from his vacation, as well as many other friends and acquaintances.

She was a resident of Nova Scotia for most of her life. She spent her childhood years growing up in Pennsylvania and spent her summers on Sober Island, where she was born. Work had her moving around the province and country as well as in Dartmouth for most of her adult life.

Rilla had been employed for many years with the Department of National Defense and always had a great story to tell from her time there. She was a loving mother and friend, and her greatest joy came from helping people around her. She was always available to all she worked with to help solve work and personal issues and gave of her time freely to anyone in need without concern for her needs.

A private ceremony and celebration of her life will be held at a later date on Sober Island with family and close friends.

Donations can be made to the Kidney Dialysis Unit or the Diabetes Unit at the Queen Elizabeth Health Sciences Centre (VG Site).
